The Essence of Incense Sticks

When entering the world of incense, sticks are often the go-to option for both beginners and seasoned users. Their popularity lies in their simplicity and the wide array of fragrances available making them ideal for everything from quiet evenings to casual gatherings or personal rituals. Some incense sticks employ an unscented punk with bamboo core, dipped in oils that are all-natural, or a blend of natural and cosmetic-grade perfumes. Others, known as masalas and durbars, employ a mixture of herbs, powders and resins, which are hand-rolled or machine-rolled onto a bamboo stick. There are other varieties as well, that are stickless and have no bamboo core at the center. The various types of sticks depend on region of the world that they are made. Each type results in a smooth, steady burn and a pleasant release of aroma that lingers in the air long after the flame is out. Different regions of the world are appreciated for the variety of incense sticks they produce. Some popular styles include:

  • Dipped sticks - this style starts with a punk made from wood products that are dipped into fragrance oils. This style enjoys a more concentrated fragrance. Escential Essences brand incense sticks are dipped and made in the USA.

  • Charcoal - this style employs a charcoal punk dipped in fragrance oils. Examples are found in the Mystic Temple Incense line include Aloeswood, Egyptian Musk, Temple of the Winds.

  • Dipped/Combination - this style employs a combination of India's fragrant masala herbs, first rolled on a stick and then dipped in fragrance oils to create a complex aroma. Each of these Mystic Temple incenses are dipped/combination fragrances: Ganges Flower, Pink Jasmine, Rainforest, Tibetan Temple Blend.

  • Masala - this style is a combination of up to 30 fragrant ingredients, which are combined to create a type of dough that is rolled onto a bamboo stick and then sun dried. This style generally does not have many high notes; however, the rich aromas are experienced best when burned, with the fragrance sometimes lasting for days. Examples of Masala incenses.

  • Wood-based Masala - primarily made with sandalwood powder as its main ingredient and underlying fragrance. Sometimes additional scents are added such as amber, frankincense, cedar or myrrh. Examples include Mystic Temple Red Sandalwood, Saffron & Sandalwood, Extra Special Sandalwood, Amberwood, Om Shanti, Heart Chakra, Divine Woods, and Musk Sandalwood.

  • Durbar/Champa - a combination of masala and gums which make the sticks semi-moist to the touch. Durbar translates to "Royal Court". These fragrances were originally reserved for royalty or burned for special services in temples. More costly varieties are made with a precious resin from the Ailanthus triphysa tree, also known as the Halmaddi tree, native to Southeast Asian tropical rainforests. This scent gave Nag Champa its popularity. These fragrances are rich and complex. Examples found in the Durbar style.

  • Dhoop - this style is the most ancient form of Indian incense, mentioned in the Vedas. It's a masala herbal blend, extruded and rolled into thick sticks, without a bamboo core. Some types are soft and pliable, allowing smaller pieces to be broken off, then rolled into smaller balls or cone shapes. Chandan Dhoop, Kesar Chandan, and Musk Masala Dhoop Cones are examples of dried dhoop.

  • Shinkoh - popularly known as joss sticks, and traditionally native to Japan, China and Vietnam, this style is similar to dhoop, but much more refined form of extrusion sticks, which are thinner and generally contain ground benzoin resin as the base ingredient. This style is popular for small rooms and meditation settings due to its light, subtle, soft aromas.

  • Simpoi - Tibetan-style masala-dhoop are also extruded sticks, meaning they have no bamboo core and are generally earthy fragrances made from simple, natural ingredients and herbs found in the Himalayan mountain range.

One of the key reasons incense sticks remain a favorite is the variety of scent profiles they offer. Whether you're creating a cozy vibe, romantic setting, spiritual reflection, or seeking inspiration for personal creativity, there’s an incense stick for every moment.
